What are tuberous breasts?
Tuberous breast syndrome, or tubular breasts, is a medical condition that occurs when one or both of a patient’s breasts fail to develop during puberty, resulting in breasts that are tubular in shape instead of round. While tuberous breasts don’t have any significant health effects on patients, they can cause emotional distress and complications for women who wish to breastfeed because tuberous breasts often lack enough glandular tissue to produce milk.
The exact cause of tuberous breasts is unknown. While there is no known genetic cause, scientists hypothesize that tuberous breasts develop in the womb. The most well-known possible cause of tubular breast deformity is irregular connective tissue at the breast base. The irregular tissue constricts the breast, leading to uneven and irregular development.
